The social media bans are being celebrated by anxious parents worldwide — and cybersecurity experts are watching the policy collapse in real time. Governments in Australia, the UK, France, and over a dozen other countries have passed or are actively pushing legislation banning kids under 16 from social media platforms. The intent is right. The execution is already unraveling, and the reason isn't surprising: banning something doesn't eliminate the demand for it. It just drives it underground. Setting up a VPN takes thirty seconds. There's no technical sophistication required — a Google search, a download, and a kid who wants access to Instagram has access to Instagram. The only difference is now they're routing through unmoderated networks, potentially logging into platforms with zero safety infrastructure, and doing it without their parents knowing. Jason breaks down the real problem: this is a have-and-have-nots issue. Families with financially comfortable, tech-savvy parents can run parental control software. Everyone else? The legislation is functionally useless. And the parents who couldn't be bothered to manage screen time before the ban aren't suddenly becoming digital safety advocates because a law passed. The deeper issue — the one Jason doesn't let anyone off the hook on — is that the adults pushing these laws are equally addicted to the same platforms. The dopamine loop doesn't discriminate by age. Social media was engineered to be addictive, full stop. Treating it as a kid problem while defending adult use isn't a policy. It's avoidance. Jeremy and Jason dig into the full picture: why the VPN loophole is a symptom, not the disease; why parental engagement matters more than legislation; and why the real conversation about social media addiction keeps getting postponed because it would have to include all of us. 🎧 Brobots is a weekly tech podcast hosted by Jeremy Grater and Jason — covering AI, health, and what it means to be a better human in a world that's changing faster than the ethics can keep up. 📍 New episode every Monday → https://brobots.me 🎧 Listen on Spotify, Apple Podcasts, and everywhere else #SocialMediaBan #TeenMentalHealth #DigitalParenting
